Late February can be an amazing time on the lower Yuba River. If the skwala hatch is going to happen, this puts us on the property at the most likely time to experience it, and the river is beautiful this time of year. In addition to possibly coming across the skwala hatch, we may see fish feeding on other hatches, too, like BWO and midges. With the days becoming noticeably longer, the fish become more active, which can bring fish to the surface.
TheUC property offers us access to about 2 miles of river on private property. Around the parking/staging area, access to the river is relatively easy, but to access the upper river requires hiking, up to nearly 2 miles in one direction. To fish the river, fly fishers must wade. Wading levels vary from easy to difficult, so you must know your limits. Fly fishers MUST have a Steelhead card in addition to your standard inland fishing license.
We will meet at the UC access-gate between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., where registrants will sign a UC waiver before entering the property. Once all registrants show up or at 8:30, whichever happens first, all registrants will be allowed on the property. The gate will be closed and locked after. We need to be off the property before dusk. For all registrants, camping and lodging will be arranged by registrants. There is a covered pavilion with picnic tables overlooking the water that provides a pleasant place to eat lunch.
