Jim McCombs fishing Hot Creek, Sept. 2008

Welcome to the Diablo Valley Fly Fishermen club website. We are a group of men and women who share a common interest in the sport of fly fishing. The members of the DVFF help each other develop their skills and knowledge in the pursuit of this fascinating sport.

The DVFF serves its members through club activities and resources including a novice seminar, a Youth Fly Fishing program, skills seminars, fishing outings, guest speakers at regular meetings, an online forum, a DVD lending library, Facebook page, and an annual auction.

The club sponsors a scholarship for research in Fisheries Biology and/or Riparian or Limnetic Ecology by a student of the UC Davis College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Center of Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture. The DVFF also supports a large Trout In the Classroom program and sponsors the local Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing-Martinez, CA program.

Anyone interested in fly fishing is eligible and welcome to become a member of the DVFF.

The John Day River
with Guide Aaron Helfrich

Aaron Helfrich will be discussing a fishing trip on the third longest undammed river in the continental United States: the wild and scenic John Day River in Oregon. He will discuss different fishing techniques for smallmouth bass as well as some of the history and geology of the area.
Helfrich Aaron Speaker 2018.02Aaron was born into a legacy. His grandfather, Prince Helfrich, started guiding during 1920 at age 13 and helped design the McKenzie River drift boat. Aaron’s father, Dean, also started guiding as a boy and is still active at 77 years old. Aaron was 11 years old when he led his first paid guide trip during 1977 on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

He worked nearly every summer after that and, after high school, had aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. He started and graduated college with a pre-med degree and while awaiting word on my continuing on to medical school, during a trip with his dad and brothers realized that he would be happiest and most fulfilled working on rivers. He’s never looked back and since 1982 had guided on numerous rivers in several states, count Hollywood and music stars and a past President among his clients.
